When Is Wisdom Teeth Removal Necessary?

People often wonder whether wisdom tooth extractions are routine for every patient. At Berry Springs Dental, we recommend wisdom teeth extractions only when they are clinically necessary. The following are some reasons why we may recommend having your wisdom teeth extracted:

• Crowding and Misalignment: When there's no room in the mouth for your wisdom teeth to erupt correctly, they can grow in at odd angles, putting pressure on neighboring teeth, which can lead to crowding or misalignment.
• Impaction: When a wisdom tooth is impacted, or trapped beneath the gum line, it can lead to complications, including significant pain, infection, swelling, a cyst, and damage to surrounding teeth and bone.
• Decay and Infection: The third molars, being far at the back of the mouth, are often difficult to clean effectively, making them prone to decay and chronic infection.
• Gum Disease: Wisdom teeth that are only partially erupted can create a flap of gum tissue that traps bacteria and is nearly impossible to keep clean, increasing the risk of gum disease.
• Potential for Problems: We may recommend extracting wisdom teeth if they pose a high risk of future complications.

What Are Other Reasons You May Need to Have a Tooth Extracted?

At Berry Springs Dental, our goal is to preserve your natural teeth whenever possible. However, there are times when we must extract a tooth to protect your smile. The following are some reasons you may need to have a tooth extracted:

• Severe Damage: We may need to extract teeth with severe, irreparable damage to prevent complications.
• Gum Disease: If a tooth's supporting structures have been severely damaged due to advanced gum disease, extracting it may be your only viable option.
• Tooth Fracture: A tooth fracture, especially one that extends vertically below the gum line, can lead to severe pain and require extraction.
• Orthodontic Treatment: We may recommend extracting one or more teeth to create the space needed for your remaining teeth to move into alignment.

What Is Socket Preservation?

Following a tooth extraction, the surrounding bone naturally begins to remodel, leading to bone loss and changes in the shape of your mouth. With socket preservation, we place a bone grafting material in the tooth's socket immediately after extraction, which helps maintain the integrity of the bone in the area, promotes tissue healing, and reduces the likelihood of complications, including the painful condition known as dry socket.

Aside from preserving your jawbone, socket preservation can prevent a bony defect, a condition characterized by the bone deteriorating and collapsing in the area where the tooth once was, leaving an irregular or sunken contour in the ridge. The straightforward bone grafting procedure helps promote healing and recovery and provides a healthier foundation for future restorations, such as dental implants. Most importantly, it can prevent a very painful complication known as dry socket.
